JOHNNY on the SPOT

TARGET:

Accountability and Responsibility

“My job if elected is not to be bought and to bring back Accountability and Transparency to the people and fix the issues that We the People need fixed.”

I grew up in Anderson on the westside of town. We had a one parent income and 5 kids in the house. My Mama worked 3 jobs just to make ends meet. Sometimes we didn’t have water, a phone, lights. We didn’t have healthcare, just doctor bills piled up.

My grandmama lost her farm when they rezoned. She didn’t know how to fight it. It was just how it was and that had been where most our food came from.

In high school, I had pretty decent grades and didn’t want to go down the wrong path. I know firsthand how hard it is to stay in school and how much a good teacher can change our lives. My English teacher, Miss Pruett, talked me into signing up for school and helped me get scholarships.

I also know firsthand how much healthcare is costing. I have diabetes and couldn’t afford my medication until Obamacare. My wife’s insurance costs through her employer keep going up, with less and less coverage. We are the only nation at our level that doesn’t cover everyone. Our elderly don’t get full coverage after paying for it their entire lives. We can do better.

“We have enough small businesses if they got the tax breaks big companies get, they could grow, but the way Columbia is ran, small businesses can’t get that. Only the big companies can get the massive tax cuts.”

Affordability

We're taking home less and less pay while the cost of everything keeps climbing. Gas prices continue to rise while major gas companies are showing record profits to their shareholders, again.

Accountability

Republicans gerrymander districts without consequence, putting their interests above everyone else. We need leaders who are more interested in representing us and our interests.

•Small Businesses

Tax breaks should go to small businesses, not large corporations. They drive our economy, fuel the supply chain, and strengthen local communities — yet they lack fair representation from at every level of government.

•Public Education

Reduce funding diversions from public schools and create a teachers union to ensure educators are compensated fairly. We need to ensure that public education is protected to ensure future generations can compete locally, nationally and globally.

•Healthcare

Healthcare costs are through the roof and must be brought under control. Mental health coverage needs to become a priority to help our children and adults be successful. The money is there, but current state representatives refuse to use federal funding to help.
